Martin

I email him stuff about what I'm doing today, I ask him what he's doing. I want him to know that I'm thinking of him. I hadn't seen Martin for at least 10 years, before getting back in contact with im again. Martin is my brother. Since a couple of months we know he has terminal cancer. He is dying.

I remember him as a kid, how life was tougher on him than on us, his siblings. I remember how my father picked on him everytime he did something wrong. I remember him being ridiculed. He must have felt lesser than the rest of us when we were together. That's sad, being surrounded by your family and not feeling safe. At least I think he must have felt like that. We don't really talk about those kind of things now. We're keeping it positive!

Martin, that blond, skinny boy, who broke bonds with his family because... because of what? And does it really matter in this situation? Isn't this the time to let go of our differences? To not make things more difficult than they already are? Martin has no contact with his mom. Doesn't want any contact with his mom. Feels she 'tried everything to make his life miserable'. But what does that mean if you're living in Belgium, have a wife, a stepdaughter and a daughter, when you have a good job? If you may be proud of what you have accomplished, if you've shown the world you cóuld do it, you cóuld do it together. He has a mom that reminds him of times and places he wants to forget about, I have a mom who is being torn apart because her dying son won't see her. A son to whom she already had said farewell. A situation that she could finally look at with peace in her heart. As long as you know that the other person is doing okay, it's easier to have peace with these kind of decisions. But now things are different, now her motherheart screams because one of her sons is dying and keeping that in mind, he still wants no contact with her.

I have a brother who's dying and a mother who's being torn apart and I write 'stuff' about what I'm going to do today, ask him what he is going to do, because I need him to know that I'm thinking of him. There are so many things I would like to say, would like to ask, but I can't take the risk of losing this contact. Because I have a brother who is dying and a mother who is being torn apart.

=========================

Martin is mijn broer.

I carry your heart

Yesterday I watched a movie called 'In her shoes', it's not a fantastic movie and if it weren't for the poem that is read at the end by one of the characters, I probably wouldn't have watched it at all. The poem is by E.E. Cummings and it's called 'I carry your heart with me'. I love it, it brings tears to my eyes. Can you imagine someone sending you a poem like that? I'd like to think that this poem can also be used to describe our relationship with God. Wouldn't it be wonderful to live our Christian lives carrying Gods heart in our heart and letting the world know about it?

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)

i fear no fate(for you are my fate, my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Cummings en het heet 'i carry your heart'.

Footprints in the sand

I came across a song sung by Leona Lewis and of course had to think of this poem. Wanted to share.

One night I had a dream
I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord
and across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints
, one belonged to me and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times in my life.
This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you would walk with me all the way,
but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints.
"I don't understand why in times when I needed you most,
you should leave me."
The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child,
I love you and I would never, never leave you
during your times of trial and suffering.
"When you saw only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."

=======================================

en antwoordde op mijn vragen;
"Mijn lieve kind, toen het moeilijk was,
toen heb ik jou gedragen..."

My coat

I have a coat that no longer fits

I'm insecure, not half as tough as I pretend to be. I wear a coat that no longer fits, but of which I know it protected me against the winds, the rains, the storms. Not because it made me feel good, or gave me warmth, but because when I wore it, I could convince myself that nothing mattered. That coat was my shield. Put everything little thing in boxes and hide them in the pockets of my coat. What you can't see can't hurt you right? Sometimes that's what you need to survive. Stupid thing though is that your coat gets heavier and harder to wear, but walking around without a coat is not an option. Honestly? I'm starting to detest wearing that coat, yes I'm surviving, but who wants to just survive?

I have a coat that no longer fits

In one of the pockets, well maybe all of them, there are little notes. They say how to behave in certain situations. How to respond. What someone expects of me. What I think someone expects of me. How I can get approval, how to avoid getting rejected. If I were to combine all those little notes in a book, it would be to heavy to carry around. I miss little notes which say what I want, what I expect and what I can do to fullfill those expectations. While wearing my old coat it never occured to me to write that down, because that's not what matters when I wear my old coat. What I want is emotionally too hard, who I am is too complex because I just never took the time to think about that. I don't have pockets in my old coat for those kind off thoughts and even if I did have them, they would be too difficult to carry around with all the stuff I'm already carrying around with me.

I have a coat that no longer fits

I'm looking at my old coat. It's a mess. The pockets are giving way, the seems are torn. It isn't comfortable anymore. I get tired when I wear it. It's so heavy by now, that it is almost impossible to wear. But when the winds start howling, when the rains start falling, when the dark clouds gather for the storm, it's the only coat I have.

I have a coat that no longer fits

In order to live and not just survive I need another coat. No clue what it should look like. No clue how many pockets this one will have. No clue if I'm supposed to look at all the stuff in my old coat and decide what to put into my new coat and what not. No clue if this new coat is going to protect me. People try to help with my new coat. "You just have to....". I get a little sick and a little bit angry when I hear someone saying that. If I 'could just do things differently', don't you think I would already be doing things differently? It's like I tell someone to "just perform an operation", that's not something everyone can "just do"? If I could "just wear a different coat", I would have done so a long time ago!

I have a coat that no longer fits

I don't want to wear this coat anymore. It has become too heavy. I know it, I feel it. I want a new coat. One that'll fit again. One that is beautiful because I think so, not because someone else thinks so.

I have a coat that no longer fits

God loves me. I am a pearl in Gods hand and I can be who I am. That's the lining of my new coat, the threads that will keep everything together. Who I am, what I want, what makes me happy, will be the fabric of my new coat. Love will be the lining of my new pockets. Love for my loved ones, my neighbours, myself and God. Everything that ends up in my new pockets will be surrounded with love, forgiveness and grace. At least.. that's what I want. I'm still missing the cutting pattern on which to base my new coat. But that's, with Gods help, what I'll be figuring out.

I have a coat that no longer fits

Time to make me a new coat!

================================================

Daarop staat hoe ik me in bepaalde situaties moet gedragen.
